Sailor Chic: Palazzo Pants
Posted by Theadora Brack on Jul 9th 2023
Celebrating the launch of the summertime season, let’s travel to the South of France for some old-school cool inspiration. No airline ticket is necessary for this time travel journey. Just a sense of adventure! Meet our current favorite warm weather wardrobe staple: Palazzo pants. These eye-catching, wide-legged wonders can be dressed up or down, ideal for outdoor concerts, holiday celebrations, backyard parties, and most definitely window-shopping strolls around Pike & Rose.
Hooked?
Dig the comfy-chic vibe? Here’s a little history about palazzo pants and beach pajamas. Flashing back, we have Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel to thank for taking the French naval uniform to the streets in 1916. Like a jazz musician, Coco deftly improvised with fabric, color, and menswear silhouettes. Off the hook, the silky loungewear caught fire at the seaside and in Paris overnight, and soon beach pajamas followed suit. “It is always better to be underdressed,” according to Coco. We agree.
Then, around 1931, the trend reached the States, making the scene not only on the boardwalks, but at dance halls as well. Here are a few of the zippy headlines: “Beach Pajamas! For work! For sleep! For play! Colorful pageant of pulchritude! One and two-piece pajamas, so smart and colorful that you will want to wear them all day long . . . Schiaparelli’s one-piece pajamas with the camisole bodice are so right in this movement . . . Pajamas-by-the-sea are novel, nautical and slightly naughty!”
