Wardrobe Staple: The Blazer

If fact, we recently tried on a six-gold button number in velvet, and suddenly felt like sprinting down the street while throwing our berets up in the air, totally à la Mary Tyler Moore. But first, here’s a little history about the blazer.

Trail Blazer

Acording to fashion lore, the “blazer” got its name in 1825 from the “blazing red” jackets worn by the rowing team at St. John's College in Cambridge. During the 1890s, our favorite topper wooed the fashion mavens of the day as the “Talk of the Town” one-dollar deal in Wanamaker Department Store’s newspaper ads. 

<- Our confidence-building BFF then became the coveted “working girl” closet staple from the 1960s through the shoulder-padded ’80s, and is still stealing scenes in TV shows like the “Emily in Paris” Netflix series. The cast has never looked so smart, outfitted in blazer-centric OOTDs, curated by costume designer Marylin Fitoussi. 

And now, one of our team's favorite look can be pulled directly from Detective Lopez (TV show The Rookie). She is always taking down the "bad guys" all while sporting a graphic tee with one of her many blazers!  ->

Tip: New to bright colors? If so, team your dazzler with a head-to-toe neutral palate. Or not! As Fitoussi recently told YOU magazine, “Do whatever you want and break the rules, or make your own rules.” Here, here at Scout & Molly's, we agree.
