New Year Inspo: The Sleeves Have It!

Looking for some OOTD inspiration for the New Year? We’ve got you covered. 

Here at Scout & Molly’s, we love historical TV shows and movies—especially when the epic period dramas inspire us to add some big screen oomph and razzle-dazzle drama to our own personal wardrobe pieces. Because experimenting with fashion should be fun, we’re always on the quest for the best cinematic sartorial ideas. Today we’ve added Ridley Scott’s 2023 “Napoleon” film to our must-see list. 

Starring Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte and Vanessa Kirby as Empress Joséphine, we’ve been watching the trailer nonstop, each time fast-forwarding to the dance scene (at the 41 seconds mark) for a glimpse of the ball gowns. Created by costume designers Janty Yates and David Crossman, the hand-sewn marvels flaunt diaphanous empire silhouettes, wide décolletage, and bejeweled, gauzy cap sleeves. 

And that’s not all. 

Honestly, the trailer alone checks all the boxes for the team here. In addition to the gowns with the decorative sleeves and ribbon chokers, it also features ermine-lined purple velvet cloaks adorned with gold bees, halo crown wreaths, and pearl tiaras along with a Napoleonic coronation, soft golden naturalistic light, and a slow- grooving, moody cover of Radiohead’s 1999 The National Anthem. Joséphine’s signature drop pearl earrings make a cameo at the 1.45-minute mark. Wait for it.
